Atticus,

Where have you been all my life?

"Shaven-heads, short-trousers and boots aside, I see fellow Muslims with a deep attachment to the Qur'an and Sunnah..."

Does anyone remember or even know that it is from the Sunnah to wear your pants above your ankle and to wear your hair to your ears? As far as the boots are concerned maybe its just a style. The salafis youth in Southern California have begun to wear the color blue, and long sleeve shirts under short sleeve shirts. Its just a style guys and not an insurrection.

Bro. Yusuf is so harsh and easy with his condemnations.

Brother Yusuf, I really enjoy your blog, but I must protest at your glib characterisation of the dress and manner of many of the Muslims in South London. It's not accurate and it's totally uncalled for, especially in the context of your argument. In fact, I write this as I'm watching a fantastic series on ITV called 'Mosque' which is about the very community that you've just dissed. Shaven-heads, short-trousers and boots aside, I see fellow Muslims with a deep attachment to the Qur'an and Sunnah doing great things within their community. May Allah (SWT) reward them.

[Bikhair here]

(Bro. Yusuf, I still didnt figure out how to change my screen name. I will give you my password and InshaAllah maybe you can do it for me.)

"Interesting to hear how your folks would react if you married a non-Horn African."

Bro. thats funny for so many reasons. Non-Horn African, lol.

Anyway, the sister's sentiments is similar to the ones here in America among black Americans and black africans. While black african men may date (sleep with) black american women, there is this culture of superiority when its comes to views of black africans toward black americans. They have the same stereotypes of black americans as most foriegners do, shiftless, criminal, and non-academic. Which further points to the fact that American culture is trully America's biggest export.

Also in black neighborhoods in American, it its typicallly Koreans who are seen as minority group disenfranchising black business. This relationship was highlighted when a Korean store clerk shot and killed a young black girl, sparking all kinds of issues between blacks and all those Koreans who sell them thier alcohol and hair products. Here in the states we have huge swapmeets owned by an East Asian family or families that sell everything from fake hair to stereo equipment. There are some African shop owners that do hair or sell similar products but for the most part in the hood, a large portion of businesses are owned by East Asians, mainly Koreans.

Salaam, Saggal: the dress described is commonly associated with black and Somali Wahhabis in south London (and perhaps elsewhere). The shaven head, the short trousers, the thick socks and clumpy boots, often Caterpillar boots (Cat are commonly associated with the bulldozers used by Israeli army demolition men).

Interesting to hear how your folks would react if you married a non-Horn African. Weird that Afrocentrics are so sold on Ethiopia and "Jah" - the "African Code" linked off the Ligali site even includes Amharic script on its logo! I'm not sure how long they could outcast you; it's a huge sin to do that. But I've come across Somali ladies who point blank refuse to marry a Kenyan African even though they'll marry a white convert. It's sad, and stupid. Muslims have been in Kenya for centuries.

The similarities of Catholicism to Shi'ism are very superficial: it's just that Shi'ites have a more formal clerical structure than Sunnis. Sunni imams are hardly lay preachers; they study under shaikhs for years and receive a formal qualification called an <em>ijaza</em>. The difference is that they don't have to belong to an organisation or obey a "senior" in a hierarchy. In fact, Catholicism is the mainstream of western Christianity while Sunnism is the mainstream of Islam, and both have the concept of a chain of transmission, which Methodism really doesn't.

Just to make it clear Yusuf, that email came to me from a friend who had it forwarded to him from a lady who was black (I'm assuming given the content of the email). It was not directly from Ligali, though they pretty much imply the same thing.

*I don't mean the high-water pants*

Salam Yusuf,

Whom are you describing above? I'm intrigued.

Where I come from, the Horn of Africa, only the Salafi are known to wear high-water pants, but in London, I often come across white converts wearing them and I'm bit confused. Are they Salafi too?

Although I am mixed Eritrean-Somali myself, the majority of my friends are Asian (Pakistani, Indian). And whereas I'm so steeped in their culture and eat and sleep in their homes, I know that a marriage between myself and an Asian man is very unlikely. Yes, they are racist when it comes to marriage, but not any more so than my own people. If I even considered marrying a black person from the rest of Africa i.e not an Ethiopian or Somali or Eritrean or Sudanese, then my people would outcast me! I know it's stupid and I don't agree with it but at least it makes me appreciate the difficulty faced by Asian friends.

To go back to the water-pants brothers, my friends often joke that I'll very likely end up marrying one of them as they seem to be the only ones without prejudice in terms of whom to marry, as long as one is a good Muslimah that is. But, if as I have assumed they are Salafi, I think they'll be too strict for me...even though to my Hanafi school adherent Asian friends, my strick following of the Shafi'i school makes me a strict and ascetic sunni already but I disagree...which btw reminds me, I watched a programme last night on channel 4 titled 'Paradise Found' -the presenter compared Sunni Muslims to the Methodists and the Shiite to Catholics. So how come then Catholic converts don't choose Shia Islam intead of Sunni Islam? ...I'm just being silly now.
