Sensational Indian gender study disputed

A rather sensational study which was trumpeted all over the news yesterday, claiming that ten million girls had been lost over the last 20 years due to abortion and plain murder by families who wanted sons, has been questioned today by (at least) three separate groups of experts:

A spokesman for the Indian Medical Association acknowledged that prenatal selections used to take place, but said they were not as widespread as before and that the Lancet report was exaggerated.

"This has not been happening for the past four or five years after strict laws were put in place," the spokesman, Dr Narendra Saini, said.

Its disputed, but look at the reasons its disputed - none challenged the data. Rather, they claimed rules were in place (so it isn't happening, dont worry) and the other person claimed it simply isn't possible, because he would have noticed fewer girls.

Neither objection to the study is very scientific. I have thusfar not seen a serious challenge to the study.

Assalaamu alaikum,

I've seen quite a few reports about this over the years. The fact is that in some areas, there are 7-8 girls for every 10 boys, and that means that in those areas, 2-3 girls out of 10 are being killed.
