They weren’t all extremists, then

This is an email I got from the New Muslims’ Project email list, regarding the demo on Saturday:

assalaamu alaykum,

i was at saturday’s demostration,

yes the stewards were HT [Hizb-ut-Tahreer],

almost all the banners and placards were HT, people were free to bring their own but HT had a big stack of them for people to take.

however i would say the vast majority of the people there were not HT, my local masjid organised a coach and not a single person is a HT member, we just realised the necessity of cooperating when doing something good and leaving well alone when they do something we disagree with.

there were also other brothers there from sheffield, mostly followers of sheikh nazim and definate non-HT.

everyone else seemed to be a mix, but i was disapointed actually that the HT’s didnt get more people out if they have all this membership up and down the country.

assalaamu alaykum,

Just a quick question: why do HT demonstrators use orange placards?

I just saw a newsnight interview with the organiser of the protest on the panel, I believe he his the leader of a group called almuhajiroun.

That guy does not seem to me as full there. He seems a bit possessed, I don’t know by what! I think he sees himself as the Caliph (perhaps someone as Ali ibn Abi Talib).

For his own saftey and the safety of others, I would put this brother under house arrest before he kills someone unjustly.

I think orange plackards are used as they show up best in the daylight - i heard they tested many different colours and found orange to be the most effective - seems like a practical reason.

I was also at the saturday demo - was very well organised and well restrained. I heard a sun Times reporter amazed at the contrast to the day before. Police were also v. happy.
