Salams,

I think you might like this: <a href="http://www.youos.com" rel="nofollow"><a href="http://www.youos.com" rel="nofollow">http://www.youos.com</a></a> - an operating system within your web browser so you can work wherever you are.

Thanks for the ubuntu tips. I'm struggling a little bit with this - but the wireless network support is a great improvement on WinXP, so no great regrets.

Tim: try using APT or one of its derivatives to download RealPlayer from the Ubuntu package repositories. It is in the Multiverse repository (being a proprietary package).

Have you by any chance come across this file for Ubuntu:

"realplayer_10.0.6-0.0_i386.deb"

The link provided in the Desktop Guide is broken...

...have tried downloading directly from the RealPlayer website, but have been unable to install successfully...

...so can't access audio/video content on BBC website.

Any ideas?

The Lisa was definitely pre-Mac (at least my memory says I'm 99.9% certain ;) ). I would assume it came out between the Apple III and the Mac, but I wouldn't swear to it. A former colleague of mine, whom I haven't kept in touch with, would know for sure; he's a collector of Apple computers (all of the various brands).

JD: I was aware of the Lisa, but wasn't sure if it came between the Apple III and the original Mac, or after the Mac. It used roughly the same system as the first Mac anyway.

As-Salaamu 'alaikum

The difference between a Mac and a Dell is that a Mac can run Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X, but runs the latter by default. A Dell can run Windows (or Linux, if you choose to install it). It can't run Mac OS X because it requires special hardware which only the Mac has, and because Apple has specifically rigged the OS so that non-Apple hardware can't run it.

You have to install special software, called Boot Camp, to run Windows on a Mac; I can't comment on its quality since I've never used it. Yes, you can get Microsoft Word for the Mac; you can run your Windows programs on a Mac under Windows but not under Mac OS.

The Mac is in my experience easier to set up and maintain than Windows. You have to install the OS yourself, which is not at all difficult unless you want to install more than one operating system, like Windows (again, seek advice elsewhere on doing this). For example, connecting to other computers is much easier with a Mac than with Windows (having set up "Network Places" on Windows, it takes a long time and has to be done again each time a computer gets a new IP address). Mac OS is generally more secure than Windows, being based on Unix; it is not virus-proof but there are hardly any viruses out there for it. Bear in mind that Unix has been in development for decades; its development began in the early 1970s and was used first on mainframes and later on high-power graphics workstations, and came into common use very recently as normal computer hardware became capable of running it.

Life span: I'm not sure. Whatever type of computer you buy may well be obsolete within months. If I were looking for another main computer I'd probably buy another Mac, simply because it can run Mac OS X as well as Windows. The only disadvantage of the Mac is that they are nowhere near as expandable as a PC - fitting new memory or hard drives and the like is much more difficult, so get the best you can afford at the outset if you're buying a Mac.

As for the difference between Apple and Mac: Apple is the manufacturer and Mac (short for Macintosh and never spelt MAC) is the computer. Apple started out in the late 1970s and built the Apple I, the Apple II, the Apple III, then the Macintosh, and all the systems it's built since have been based on the Macintosh.

Asalaamualaikum wa rahmatullah...

Brother Yusuf, I need some help. I am going to be buying a laptop soon, Insha'Allah, I wanted to know if you think I should get a MAC or a Dell. I would like to get a Sony but they are too much and the MACs are affordable right now. Dells are always cheap but I hear they start to trip after a while.

What does it mean when you can run Windows on a MAC?

Will there be Microsoft Word on MAC because I will really need that.

If I had some programs on my PC now, that I want to move to my MAC, can I do that?

Are they easy to use?

What is their life span?

I dont need anything super fancy but I dont want anything that is primitive. MACs and Dells are both cheap but if you had $1500 to spend which would you get and why?

My husband knows some Paki brothers who do IT at the UNI and they always suggest Sony, what do you think?

Whats the diff between Apple and MAC.
