JD: Thanks so much, brother, for trying to create fitna.

JD you have obviously completely misunderstood me. I was responding to Yusuf's post, which talked about an incident in the UK - there was no mention of a Malay or a Chinese anywhere in Yusuf's post, and I was not replying to, or even aware of Angie's comment.

You have obviously, and completely erroneously, assumed that I was responding to Angie's comment - I was not; in fact Angie's comment was not even published on the website when I posted mine; it was probably still in Yusuf's moderation queue.

Hence, please do not be so quick to assume or to judge others.

The anecdote is true; I've blogged about its repercussions a number of times over the past few months.

You may think this is a case of so-called "typical South Asian Muslim ignorance, superstition and dogmatism"; however, first, Malays are not from South Asia (Pakistan, India, or Bangladesh). And second, we, the Malay/Muslim community of S'pore, know Islam a lot better than you assume.

Thanks so much, brother, for trying to create fitna.

If this anecdote is true, I would put it down to typical South Asian Muslim ignorance, superstition and dogmatism.

It is indeed sad that a majority of Muslims from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh etc know very little about Islam, and would rather follow superstition and heresy than any reputed scholars and the classical teachings of Islam.

There was a furore last year that arose of a Malay Muslim woman over here [in Singapore, Southeast Asia and yes it's NOT a Chinese country, mind] who wrote to the Forum page of the daily complaining about dogs allowed on taxis. The reason she gave was that the dog being an unclean creature might drool on the seat of taxis. And Muslims would unwittingly sit on said drool.

And guess what? A pair of ethnic Chinese [see the ethnic bit to those who are still wondering] in their 20's launched racist diatribes on a pet forum and personal blog respectively. Singapore being what it is caught said pair in no time. And boy, was there an upset over here. And it certainly moved me enough to realise the imposed multiculturalism does work to a certain extent 'cos there are ethnic Chinese who rushed to the defence of the Malays, pleading understanding, open-mindedness and sensitivity.

Moral of the story? Multiculturalism is not to be taken lightly, and that each and every citizen on this islet regardless of colour and religious affiliation ought to think twice before they engage gob before brain. Why? We cannot afford to have yet another Chinese-Malay [but there are other ethnic groups too, like Indian/Sikh, Arab, Jew, Caucasian, Eurasians, blah] racist riots which were rife not too long ago. But unfortunately, there are still idiots in our midst who tend to take things for granted.

Indeed discussion of topics that are sensitive in nature like religion and race can spark the merest of a scuffle, 'cos not everyone shares similar inference or mindset. Nor does anyone of us have the exclusive right to impose our views on people who have different ideas. And I don't blame the government here for restricting certain freedoms of speech 'cos not everyone is matured nor responsible enough to draw the line.

I had my own doubts about the credibility of this story but it is not one of these "Muslims ban Christmas" stories one sometimes finds in the (Ex)press (no doubt because some council jobsworth had misguided ideas about cultural sensitivity and was not prompted by Muslims), but comes through what I think is a reliable Muslim source who definitely believed it was genuine. I'm not sure if it crossed his mind that he was being hoaxed.
