Great article but bizzare comment...

Just before I begin I'm a revert of 2 years.

'Barelvism is inherently sectarian'

I don't think that's fair, I don't understand the reasoning behind that statement, could you explain?

Barelvis seem to be Alhamdulillah staunchly against the Taliban (because they are Deobandis) and Terrorism, which isn't something I can say for some Deobandi/Wahhabis people I've met in my time.

It may be true that they are lax in practicing overall as a group but I don't believe that is inherent in their 'way', I do agree though that they spend too much time denoucing Deobandis and not enough on other things. However based on personal experience with talking to Deobandi trained Imams, reading Deobandi books, and visiting their lectures, I know for a fact that they are heavily influenced by Wahhabism.

In all honestly I've spent a year being closely within a deobandi community and personal experience with Deobandis, they seem to have built a cultural/religious Ghetto for themselves, also their only solution to things seem to be Jamaat which seems to have created a 'sterile' atmosphere in the mosques I've visited, they also seem to be more Racist that Barelvis, the Barelvis invite Ulema of all colours to their most, I've never seen non-Asian ulema in a Deobandi mosque.

If that the argument for why they are non-sectarian... from the things I've witnessesed, heard, and talked about with my Deobandi born wife, and experiencing the naivete of the Tablighies, many of the 'ignorant comments' against Islam I hear from non-muslims are present.

In fact, some Taliban wanted Al-Qaeda out of Afghanistan but Mullah Omar felt a debt of honour for the assistance they had given during the anti-Soviet jihad. But have any Taliban members ever been implicated in terrorist attacks? I think not.

It seems to me that the unconditionally sanctuary that the Taliban offered to al-Qaeda terrorists was their downfall, just as the custom of 'private warpath' was the downfall of many an American Indian tribe.

One point about the Taliban that is rarely discussed: they weren't actually involved in any terrorism as such. You could argue that they gave sanctuary to Al-Qaeda but that doesn't automatically mean terrorism is inherent to their beliefs. In fact, some Taliban wanted Al-Qaeda out of Afghanistan but Mullah Omar felt a debt of honour for the assistance they had given during the anti-Soviet jihad.
But have any Taliban members ever been implicated in terrorist attacks? I think not.

I thought the Taliban are Deobandis.. I've heard traditional Deobandis say they are Deobandi but have been influenced by Wahhabism. But I've never heard bin Laden being Deobandi..

Shamil,

The Salafis say the Taliban are Deobandis and have been saying that for some time now.
