Of course children should not be forced to eat non-halal/kosher food and the French approach is wrong in this respect. My school dinners were pretty horrible, and a good subject for morbid or jokey reminiscences about custard that managed to be thin and lumpy at the same time. I pack my children's snacks for school (lunch is the main meal and is eaten at home at around 2 or 3 p.m.), and they might include sandwiches, fruit, cucumbers, juice, and milk.
