Why British Asian women are moving home

The Guardian: Going Back to My Roots

This is an interesting article from today's Guardian about British women of Pakistani origin who are content to settle in Lahore which, despite the oppressive image of Pakistan, "is no Mirpur: it's a large metropolitan centre" according to Sara Wajid. Among other attractions are fitting in as a Pakistani, with none of the racism that they experienced in England, and excellent career prospects for educated women.

Thanks for sharing the article.

As long as you can speak, read and write urdu well enough, it should be alright living there. Otherwise they just make fun of you and think you're dumb.

The quality of life is very good for those well-off. No houses but villas. No chores but servants. Good food and good asian clothes.

But corruption is rife and you wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of the police.

Also the society is very culture-orientated. The men are Muslims but do not control their gaze in any way.

Women who wear hijabs (properly), jilbabs and niqabs are in the minority.

Interesting. However, living in Lahore is not at all easy even for a well off British Pakistani guy let alone for a wealthy or non-wealthy British Pakistani woman. There are no personal freedoms in terms of a woman being able to do even regular daily stuff in Lahore - all this a woman can do nicely by herself in the UK. Also, EVERY bloke steers at a woman in Lahore like flies fly around Sh*t. My advice - stay in UK.

Regards,

Shahzad.
