BBC NEWS: How veil remarks reinforced its support

How Jack Straw's comments on his dislike of the niqab (and the idiotic tabloid press campaign which followed it) increased the popularity of the veil among young British Muslim women, with the local Hijab Centre, the biggest local supplier of them, seeing its trade in niqabs more than double and Jack Straw's popularity plummet among local Muslims.

I expected this would happen.

However I think this type of shallow contra religiousity isn't particularly admirable. Here or in the Middle East.

seeing its trade in niqabs more than double ... from two or three a week to five or six, according to the owner, at least as reported by the BBC. Hardly seems a top seller even now.

MASHALLAH !

Assalaamu alaikum,

I expected that, too. Just like after the Danish cartoon controversy, there was much more interest in learning about the seerah, many more lectures and activities about the Prophet (peace be upon him), etc. Not that they got the news coverage that a few violent incidents did.

They plan, but Allah is the best of planners.

From the BBC report: "A recent statement issued by nearly 30 Islamic groups... tells Muslims to 'remain united, regardless of their differences of opinion in the wearing of the veil ... and to defend the veil with all their ability'."

I'm really glad to see this, because we should support each other even if we disagree on the need for niqab. Because after the niqab, it would be the hijab... and on and on...
