To rant about Jews marks you in polite society as a cranky throwback, something ugly which crawled out of the dark past, which is why Tyndall became something of an image problem for the BNP, making it necessary to put him at arm’s length from the party itself

I think this is the core of the matter. Even Tyndall came to knew this, and stated as much after his (then fairly high - around 10%) performance in the 1994 Dagenham byelection (at a very low turnout).

To my surprise, I find myself in complete agreement with Old Pickler’s comment above.

It should be noted, by the way, that Tyndall was , iirc, later readmitted to the BNP , presumably with Griffin’s say-so.

(Also, while there is no doubt that the party’s “ideologists” are deeply antisemitic, in their appeals to the public/potential voters, even in their “bovver boy” days, this has generally been downplayed: growing up in a town where the NF/BNP were (and still are) relatively “strong”, the hatreds they expressed were principally those of Blacks, Asians, and more recently Eastern Europeans, “asylum seekers” etc) - those groups which come in for far greater demonisation than anyone else in certain elements of the media, for example.

While there is definitely a racial element to Griffin’s Muslim-bashing, the pattern of Nazis stoking popular hostility to an “out group” is the same as it ever was. It really does not matter if the group is racially or religiously defined. In fact, here he uses racial terms (Asians, normally) to mean “Muslim Asians”. They have even attempted to curry favour with Sikh and Hindu bigots as well as Jews.

The thing is that Nazis hate, and use other people’s hate. When the old hate figure ceases to be of use, they dump them and move on to someone else. And I don’t think he was on the right side of the law at all; I think he had a sympathetic jury.

Once more, to my surprise, I find myself in total agreement.

The BNP are scum - utter scum. They have re-invented themselves on the surface, but they are the same old racists.

Now they are demonising Muslims. I have serious issues with Islam, which I have talked about here in no uncertain terms. But there is a difference between criticising a religion and demonising a people. More to the point, when Griffin stirs up hate for Muslims he means “Pakis” - it’s the skin colour, not the religion.

He is also very clever, and just manages to stay on the right side of the law. In legal terms, his recent acquittal was correct - you can’t convict someone of being a bastard. But he is one, that’s for sure.

Any Jews who think Griffin is on their side have lost the plot.
