It would almost seem romantic just to get to work that way.

Heh. I do ride a train to work almost every day, and I find nothing about the experience to be romantic. :)

What a pleasant mental picture I got from hearing all the stops along your route! We've had snow off and on, and below freezing temps here in Louisville Kentucky for a week or more, and I am tired of it. One thing that I was impressed by--how much effort you make in getting places. We all drive personal cars everywhere, and the city is a bit behind in having buses but no rail for the size of our population. I would love to leave my car parked and hop a train downtown! It would almost seem romantic just to get to work that way.

Places where snow falls heavily like that, drivers become familiar with how to drive on the snow, so a snowfall won't throw people into a panic.

No it's more likely because people in places with lots of snow usually have snow chains and/or studded winter tyres...

"I must be getting old - I automatically think in inches not centimetres."

LOL. Being an American, so do I, but I've lived long enough in "metric countries" to know that not everyone's going to understand the English measurement system.

a quarter of an inch (about 1/2 cm)

I must be getting old - I automatically think in inches not centimetres.

I love London in the snow - as long as I don't have to get anywhere urgently, when everything seems to collapse. We're just not geared up for it. Canadians must laugh at us - not a nice thought.

More likely it was due to the Bosnian drivers' familiarity with how to drive on snow. As you said, every year there was heavy snow. Places where snow falls heavily like that, drivers become familiar with how to drive on the snow, so a snowfall won't throw people into a panic. Where I grew up, snowfall was extremely common in the winter. Neither my parents nor I ever had an accident on a snowy road. However, once, as a teenager, my family was heading to Florida to visit relatives. We stopped briefly at some road stop in South Carolina where I overheard one woman tell another about how they had gotten a quarter of an inch (about 1/2 cm) of snow one day, paralyzing traffic. I nearly laughed out loud when I heard that. :)

I have to agree with you here in regards to the so-called "travel chaos". I used to live in Bosnia and every year there was some heavy snow. Yet the country didn't stop moving. I suppose that's due less dependance of travel infastructure though. The weather seems to have to be dull and grey for trains to be on time.
