Comments insulting Islam, bad language, school-yard insults and personal insults are unsuitable, and people submitting them should expect refusal, alteration (clearly marked) or deletion. This applies to Muslims as to everyone else. Persistent offenders will be banned.

But seriously, the way Ataturk saw it, it wasn’t so much the hijab that he disliked, but more the niqab. Obviously he would rather have got rid of the lot, but the situation was different back then. This was said as much in his biography by Lord Kinross, where emancipation of women meant removing the veil but not necessarily the hijab. I remeber seeing a picture in that book where a Turkish feminist and supporter of Ataturk named Halide Edip, addressed a large gathering wearing the hijab (this was around the time of the war of Turkish independance or maybe afterwards), and that was sort of radical back then seeing as how most women wore the veil.
