Our community needs to stand united against this propaganda – irrespective of being Sufi or Salafi, Ikhwaani or Tahreeri, Tableeghi or Barelwi, we must realise that first and foremost we are Muslims. Was it not the case that Ibn Hajar al Asqalani, a Sufi and an Ashari criticised Ibn Taymiyyah but said that Ibn Taymiyyah had a right to the opinions he arrived at because of his level of knowledge?

“Not everyone who … not everyone … Not everyone … ” You look at it the wrong way round, actually. The interesting question is how many of those who tokk up or actively support terrorist activity followed that route. My own gues is that there a probably a higher proportion that flitted from one group to another among the terorists or terrorist gricers than there are of people who spent some time studying or learning with any one group, however loopy. One of the inspiring factors for some of the terrorists seems to be the very modern desire, inspired by the worst aspects of “western” culture, for instant gratification. .

This a bit of a side note, but I will say I think there are some problems with the misuse of the word “kafir” within the community (though considerably less so today) and across the Ummah.

But this is primarily a theological point as opposed to political matter. In the overwhelming majority of cases, it has no affect on (and is therefore none of the business of) outsiders. And the impression being left by this sensationalism of frothing at the mouth khateebs thundering constantly against non-Muslims is utterly misinformed and incredibly irresponsible.

One doesn’t promote reform within the community by seconding the inflammatory slogans of bigots.

DeenPort about the so-called Sufi Muslim Council

Don’t know if anyone else has noticed that a guy called ‘Irfan Ahmed’ from “Sufi Muslim Council” appears at the speed of lightblue lightning whenever Imam Suhaib Webb posts a comment on DeenPort to undermine and discredit the Imam’s views. I wonder why he doesn’t put up his rants on his “SMC” website instead of using DeenPort to spread fitna. A lot of DP’ers expect it to be accommoddating of diverse views and opinions from across the Muslim world, but it’s clear this Irfan guy wants to hijack it for his anti-Muslim agenda.

Interestingly, I spoke to a friend of mine who was friends with Ed back in his youth and he tells me this man was always looking to make a name for himself, which was one reason why he joined the then bravado filled ranks of HT and would also explain his personal admiration for Omar Bakri. Having failed to make any headway up the HT ladder he jumped from group to group, seeking the recognition he felt he deserved until he finally found an avenue for fortune and fame: pandering to the Islamaphobic. By building up HT into a danger and coming out as the one who puts himself at risk by warning all good people about this dangerous threat lurking within our midsts, he’s finally managed to maneuver himself into the status of hero.
