Back to democracy, back to Bhutto
A friend of feudalism (the Guardian, yesterday)
William Dalrymple (of White Mughals fame) on the depressing spectacle of Benazir Bhutto trying to cut a deal with Busharraf in order to get back in power in Pakistan. This is apparently what "democracy" means. He points out that Benazir's first term of office was notorious for incompetence, corruption and brutality, far more so than the early period of Busharraf's. (More: Umar Lee [1], [2], [3].)
Comments
Assalaamu alaikum,
Did you see her (or her PR firm's) post at The Huffington Post (a popular forum for "progressive" views in the U.S.)?
It's the most absurd thing... she portrays herself as the most wonderful person who's ever lived. And if that's not bad enough, there are several pages of comments which are mostly like "We love you, we support you, I'm honored to even be able to comment to tell you how much we love you"... Oh, and "I hope your husband's better now" - because the poor man got sick from being put in prison unjustly.
I tried to comment and point out a few things, including that her husband was jailed for rampant corruption and that the Constitution prohibits her from having a third term, but my comments were rejected. (They say that they don't reject comments for ideological reasons and they only reject them for being abusive, etc., but I've commented there on several posts lately, and they were all rejected - even though they were not abusive at all, but simply pointing out facts that they seem unaware of.)
Even her biography there is ridiculous; among other things, it says she was "the youngest Chief Executive in the world and the first Prime Minister in the Muslim world". I sent them an e-mail asking about that, but it was ignored, too.
So the U.S. administration wants her and the liberal blogosphere adores her, and they couldn't care less what the Constitution or voters of Pakistan have to say.
