		<description>As-Salaamu &#039;alaikum sis Aaminah,

You&#039;re right - he was sacked. However, very often there&#039;s no difference - people &quot;get resigned&quot;, i.e. resign when their position becomes untenable, which is what I assumed happened. But no, he was dismissed, as all the reports said.

<description>What about the fact that the British working class itself has been devastated by globalization?

		<description>Asalaamu alaikum.

It was reported here in the US that the coach was fired (not that he resigned). Which seems pretty lame to me - geez, sometimes you lose and it&#039;s not all the coach&#039;s fault.

I personally hate the ridiculous emphasis put on sports. Here in the US many disaffected youth think that the only chance they have in life is if they are athletes, and unfortunately this is perpetuated by our schools who give special treatment to athletes (more so to male than female, and only in certain sports) and do not uphold the academic standards that are attached to being able to play.

It sounds like it is different there in the UK, but here athletic programs have the greatest amount of financial support. Even when programs are threatened, it is temporary. I recall when I was in school (15 years ago) there were threats to cut all art/music/drama/newspaper etc classes and extra-curricular activities and we artists were nearly having heart attacks but no one cared. But within 24 hours of the athletic programs being threatened, it was all over the local news, parents were picketing in front of the school, and bake/raffle sales were being put on. Christmas trees are traditionally sold in front of the high schools and the money goes to fund the Athletic Boosters. Everyone bonds together over supporting our athletes...
