This was a political matter, probably, and those protests - against the “leniency” of the sentence were staged. This is not about a soft toy; it is about scoring points. For once I find myself agreeing with Salma Yaqoob.

I’d still be interested to know how anybody that does think the penalties in sharia justified for any insult, however gross, to a man dead for over a thousand years explains why they think them justified. I wouldn’t be interested in living in such a society or associating with people who wanted to live in such a society however.

Thersistes - ultimately what is justified or not differes from societies and even from individual to individual. That’s why there’s no universal law or customs.

Excellent! You work carefully through the hideous complexities surrounding the question of whether the naming of a teddy bear, or, presumably, any soft toy, might properly be considered an indictable offense.

Before reading you post, I had been facing the issue with anguished uncertainty.

This is quite wrong. She had the best of intentions, and was out there to do some good. Today one of her pupils defended her.

I hope she’s released as soon as possible.

It seems odd that boys can be called Mohammed but not a teddy bear.

Jazak Allah for this - I actually blogged about this without realising the blasphemy law had been so badly abused, it is - as you say - utterly out of keeping with the Shariah. I have therefore linked this story in a coda on the same piece.
