Salaam Alaikum,

Excellent post. I think a major problem is that the AoC's speech contained a great deal of nuance which was completly lost on the majority of British journalists.

Still it is nice reminded of the poor esteem that Islam and Muslims are held in, in the U.K. And they wonder why we feel isolated.

Read the Sun article. Cannot believe that trading standards are still allowing it to be called a newspaper. It's like Viz but without the jokes.

Actually, Williams's proposals would control shariah more effectively. People are using shariah "courts" now and marrying under shariah but the very fact that it is not legally recognised under British law means that there is no appeal against errors or bias and no legal enforcement of rights.

As far as I can tell, it was the radio interview that actually did the damage (which I listened to in full). The BBC online report that followed, like many others, relied on that interview for most of its soundbites, including the AoC's suggestion that Shariah in Britain was "inevitable", even though he went to great lengths to explain what he meant by Shariah was a long way from the media stereotypes.

Some people have construed my comments as suggesting the AoC intended to bring opprobrium on Muslims. Not so. In my view, this was an avoidable media disaster and I would include the AoC as among the ignorant - but in his case, with regards to the status of Muslims in the British media.
