I must confess that my the time the actual election came I was pretty much fed up hearing about it and didn't care who won. After all I live in Hertfordshire and don't even get to vote, yet the thing seemed to be mentioned every few minutes on the "local" news (which covers London hence the coverage). I don't think Ken was especially bad at the job (he must have done something right to do two terms) but perhaps he was loosing touch with the people a bit. Then again like you, I'm not sure about Boris. I have nothing against him, but I just hope that in a few months time people don't start regretting the situation. I also hope he improves London's transport system and brings down the cost of train travel. I doubt that will happen though.

Vote: Should we allow Islam to move into the space Christianity appears to have vacated?

Should we be blaming Muslims for the obvious fact that Christianity seems to be occupying less and less of the public space in this country? Perhaps the "distinctively Christian character of the nation's laws, values, customs & culture" isn't much more than a relic these days, and the Christian faith needs to take its place in line with all the others in our multicultural, multifaith society, and its importance judged on the level of demand for it.

Maybe continuing to insist on its primacy is rather like insisting that we continue to use Latin in the public sphere because it represents the source of a good deal of our modern-day language. We seem to manage without Latin; why can we not get along without Christianity?

Converted Muslims are particularly invited to deal with points raised by a "KScott" in

about the treatment of women and the State of Israel.

Ken's mistakes were

(1) his proposal of a £25 congestion charge

(2) his failure to dissociate himself from Labour. (He should have formally renounced his association with the Labour Party.)

(3) his failure to remind everyone that, while promises count for nothing, track record matters such as career longevity and being right about the IRA and not invading Iraq gives an indication of the quality of his judgment compared to Boris', who voted FOR the invasion.

"Some of them, of course, may well have worked against Livingstone - the Muslim campaigns in particular, which might not have even got the Muslim vote out in Livingstone's support." How did it work against Ken? Muslims were encouraged, they didnt respond properly. Are you saying the fact they were encouragd, that they were put off?

Other than BMI or M4Ken, and maybe MPAC, hardly any other organisation did anything to mobilise any Muslim voting. I wont even go near the Sufi crowd. We know the Muslim block isnt powerful, but I think too many peopel stood on the sideline (Muslim or not) and watched as Boris the Butt-head walked into office.

Anyway, dude, you voted for another candidate, not Ken, and you wasted your vote. Even if Ken isnt the best person for London, surely Boris isn't. It was a battle between them two and really Brian or anyone else didnt have a chance.
