I have Vista 64 ultimate Quad 2,4Ghz, 4G Ram, 6 satta II in raid 0. If you deactivate in vista services the superfetch service and windows LAME new search service then the OS dosnt seems to be so 'heavy' i use tipical windows in my deskctop couse aero is SO lame. I dont use automatic update to download the 'updates' and the problem if i use 64 Bits Internet Exlorer the web pages in Microsoft web site are never recognizing my os as genuine ONLY when i use 32 bits explorer i have no problem fi you try IE 8 64bit you will get the same error can drive you nuts!! The tech group in microsoft react like they never knew that problem and i dont belive them. Many older programs are NOT running in 64bits after sp1. Finaly the idea to JUMP back to XP is more and more in head every day. Linux it's 128 Bits already an all in there are working pretty speedy. My homble opionion is M$ must try to solve the problem in 64 bits Vista 'Ultimate' that i have before trying to release e 'new' O$. In the end i'll return in XP i'm afraid in 32 bits all the 'new' devices are worning fine like the lifecam 7000-vx i tryed and it failed in me....

I'm sticking to XP for as long as I possibly can. It's not broke, so I'm not going to fix it.

Thanks for the info, Yusuf. I'm fairly literate in computers and my main concern is speed and reliability. XP sp3 trashes Vista sp1 in all the test reports I've read. Sure Vista has a prettier GUI but transformation packs for XP are widely available. The only thing Vista has going for it is the 64 bit version of its OS.
I'm not holding my breath for Windows 7 either.

As-Salaamu 'alaikum,

Well, their attempt to outdo Leopard failed miserably; the Mac desktop widgets are hidden, and you have to click the dashboard logo to show them. The Windoze ones sit on your desktop all the time, they sometimes interfere with menus opened by right-clicking icons in the system tray, and they take time to load when starting, so you can open the Start menu and try loading a program, and it will take ages because it's loading the applet panel. I don't have the luxury of going back to XP but in any case, it's eight years old and much more insecure than Vista, even if it is faster.

As for going to Linux, you need to ask yourself what you use your computer for. If it's just web surfing and a bit of word processing, try OpenOffice.org which you can run on your PC, but is the main office software for Linux. If you don't like it (I don't, but then, I can get MS Office free through a volume licensing program), then don't replace Windows with Linux even if you start using Linux. Although there is a piece of software called WINE which can run *some* Windoze software on Linux, it can't run an awful lot of the software which is produced now.

Asalam Aliakum,
I recently bought a laptop and it also came loaded with Vista. Despite sp1 its still a horrible OS. From what I've been told Vista is the result of MS trying to outdo leopard OSX.
i promptly went back to XP which despite its age is far faster then Vista. If you use the nlite utility you remove loads of XP bloatware and customize your install. I am flirting with the idea of going all out Linux though. Any tips?

Hi Rowan, are you on broadband? If you're still on dial-up, I had much the same problem, but you can also buy a standalone modem as internal modems are usually "winmodems" which rely on software which is part of Windows. As for connecting to the Internet with Linux if you've got broadband, the best thing is to get a broadband router. They typically come with four ethernet sockets, and most modern computers (going back years) have Ethernet sockets. The routers and cables can be bought from Maplin's or any good computer shop.

as salaam aleikhum,Yusuf. I can sympathise : I have Windows XP, which is acting up really badly now. I would like to switch to Linux, but BT and suchlike ISPs don't offer modem drivers to connect to their internet service that run under Linux, so I need to look at how to do it.

Anyway, it's moot : I am under terrible pressure to find a job - any job - and since I am in the process of reverting to Islam (from a sort of wishy washy politico occultism), I have decided to look for work in the Muslim community. If you could find the time to advise me on this I shoule be really appreciative : my email is at my blog (scroll down a bit on the right).
