"Secondly, would people here agree if I suggested that a white English Muslim would be one of the least likely candidates for Prime Minister (opposed by whites due to his faith, and by Asians due to his race...)"

Not quite. I don't think non-Muslim Asians or many blacks and Chinese could stomach voting for a Muslim of ANY race or bloodlines.

There is certainly anecdotal evidence that Asian Muslims are reluctant to vote for an Asian Muslim from a different background. Eg Pakistanis voting for Indian or Bangladeshis. It's difficult to say what the attitudes towards white Muslim candidates by Asian Muslims are because there have been so few of these candidates in the past. Yvonne Ridley managed 12.7% in the Leicester South by-election and it's probably sensible to say that most votes came from Asian Muslims.

First of all, doesn't the fact that British political parties choose their leaders internally, rather than having their leaders elected in US-style primary elections, make it harder for a would-be Obama-style populist?

Secondly, would people here agree if I suggested that a white English Muslim would be one of the least likely candidates for Prime Minister (opposed by whites due to his faith, and by Asians due to his race...)

"In order to get the first black or Asian into Dowsning Street, they need to appeal to everyone, and not just their respective communites."

Why do you want a black or Asian in Downing street? Is there anything wrong with a white English Muslim? Would ethnic Muslims vote for a white English Muslim or would they only want people from their own community?

I am prepared to bet a large sum of money that the first black or Asian PM - assuming we have one - will be a staunch and steadfast Zionist.

Sallam alaykum.

sidi Yusuf, in regards to whether we could ever have a PM from an ethnic background. I personally feel this could one day happen. But not yet. Trevor Philips is right on what he said, but also, we need to take into account why Obama won in the USA. One of the reasons is that he appealed to the masses. In my opinion, the current offering of Asian MPs from a South Asian background don't appeal to me never mind the majority of the white population!

Your thoughts?

Salaam alaikum Abu Umar,
I think that the Afghans and Pakistanis, and Palestinians will not notice much change especially in light of all the self destructive in fighting they do.Hamas battling Fatah in Palestine, while over in Iraq the Shi'ites fight the Sunnis, and in Pakistan? The government doesn't have a handle on the tribal areas, frequent bombings and political assassinations in Pakistan. And Afghanistan, poppies are flowing out of that place like crazy, the government is only in Kabul and looks like Taliban may make another come back. Remember how just they were? Sort of like being in Crenshaw still gang banging, not trying to change your life, go to school, or get a job wondering why Obama isn't doing anything for you. I remember before you could side with the Muslim underdog without having to condone some serious human atrocities. I personally think we need a Muslim Mandela, a leader with some integrity. Maybe we need to make a collective du'a for that, cause otherwise that frightful behavior will keep Americans receptive to the neocon crap.

"I am thoroughly glad Obama won the election; it means the end of Bush's politics, which means that all his neo-con advisors and their cheerleaders in the media will become outsiders".

Don't count on it brother. I'm sure the Afghans, Pakistanis, Palestinians, and even the Iraqis will notice little difference in the transition between Bush and Obama.
