I feel sorry for that Huddersfield guy. My former boss lived in Huddersfield only later to find out that he was busted for drugs, attempted murder and robbery. People in that place must be messed up in the head.

Perhaps it was, but perhaps it was just a way of getting some favourable publicity. Did she have the self-knowledge to draw up a will and make sure that the money she earned would not be frittered away before the children got to benefit from it? Also, the fact that one of her last acts was to marry a man with two convictions for assault, both of which attracted jail sentences, suggests that she was not as “reformed” as some might think. And if you live in a leafy commuter village in Essex, you don’t need money to get your kids into a good school.

One thing in Jade Goody’s favour, she said that the money she “earned” for being famous for being famous should be used to educate her children so that they wouldn’t grow up stupid and ignorant like her.

Most stupid and ignorant people don’t know it. This was a bit of self-knowledge granted to someone who’d had a truly rotten start in life, and who converted to Christianity at the end. Coincidence? Well, maybe. But self-knowledge is a rare thing, whatever the religion.

I liked Jade Goody, although having grown up with a best mate whose family originated from Goa, I found her racism repulsive. But I’ve spent enough time around the grimmer areas of the UK (well, at least the grimmer bits of West Yorkshire) to recognise what kind of person she was. There may not be slums in Britain, but there is poverty in every other sense - just living somewhere like Sheepridge in Huddersfield (where my wife grew up) carries a stigma. Life there is tough. Like I’ve said before, Yusuf, write about what you know - Jade came from the margins of society and it aint a pretty place to grow up. Some of her behaviour was appalling, yet she had a spirit that many people - regardless of the media and pundits - admired. They knew what she’d endured.

I think the press did take the right decision this time. Jade who is no longer with us liked attension and that was the best farewell presents she could get from the press.

We all ideally prefer people to be hardworking in the usual sense, but there are some who are crafty whether they are clever or not to get whatever they want.
