There is a lot of discrimination and racism within certain communities in the Muslim Ummah. There are also a lot of people within the same community who are not racist and don’t discriminate against fellow Muslims on the basis on skin colour, nationality or such trivial things. You just have to avoid the those who are racist and associate yourself with those that are not.

Even born Muslims are looked-down upon because they’re not from a certain country, aren’t a certain colour/race or because they don’t belong to a certain tribe. It’s sad that some people prefer to keep the ways of ignorance rather than to fully adopt Islam. Allah says in the Quran (2:208) “O ye who believe! Enter into Islam fully and follow not the footsteps of the shaytan; for he is to you an avowed enemy”

I totally understand what you’re saying about converts/reverts wanting to marry a born Muslim because of the whole extended family thing, but they shouldn’t rule out marrying a fellow convert/revert because there are many convert/reverts who have had successful marriages with fellow converts/reverts.

As-Salaamu ‘alaikum, Regarding inter-ethnic marriages, i would like to say that objection to it by some is not due to racism. It is more to do with being able to integrate and build close relationship with first-generation immigrant parents who speak no or little English and wants to have close relationship with their son/daughter in laws, might feel they would not be able to build close relationship with the son or daughter in laws due to communication and cultural barriers.

@ Brooke: in response to your last comment, I don’t believe my comment falls into any of those categories because we are talking about sex, not race, and because we are talking about a personality trait other than prejudice, and the question of whether a trans woman might display any more of that characteristic than a “born” woman, to the extent that it might ruin the vibe at a women’s music festival.

The Autobiography of Malcolm X is a fascinating document in this respect. He, may Allah have mercy on him, spent his entire life in a culture in which the only thing that mattered was colour, even when people were ostensibly trying to leave colour and race behind. What he found in Islam was its complete irrelevance. Islam begins when we can leave such things behind.
