Salaam, Thanks for directing me to your post. It’s an unpopular idea that you’ve expressed here; that bigotry is often based on factors other than race and that those white people whose religion, accent, or class make them targets are too often dismissed as not really experiencing discrimination. And while I’ve known some white converts to absolutely revel in the idea that they’re now part of an oppressed minority, far more often I’ve seen them suffer the consequences of being shut out of both their white community and out of the “ethnic” Muslim communities who will never accept them as “real” Muslims. They suffer doubly because they’re shunned by the community they’re born to, as well as the one they chose, and their suffering is dismissed by those who will never let go of the idea that their supposed white privilege protects them. Thank you again.

I had to post this: Race: White Man Calls Himself African-American

A former New Jersey Medical School student, who described his ethnic background as “white, African-American,” is suing the school claiming that he had been racially discriminated against, according to the Associated Press. Paulo Serodio, a student at The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, is Caucasian but told fellow classmates and school employees that since he was born in Mozambique, he identifies himself as “white, African-American.” At first his peers recommended that he stop but, soon after, he said he discovered fliers hung up around campus, mocking him. Plus, he was assaulted and his car was vandalized. The spokesman for the dental school would not comment on the case.—

I’m not sure the Umm Zaid link is correct. The post I got was one about there being a lost sense of humour in the blogosphere. Hmm.

I’m not sure I agree with you on this one Yusuf. Have you read Peggy McIntosh’s “Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack”? That pretty much explains where I was coming from in my piece.

Wow, that was scathing! I don’t think I’ve read UmmZ go on such a tear before. And timely! I’m stowing away my white folks draft and hitting the sack. For the record though, I don’t think white guys in hats and beards lose much white privilege in the first place.
