“We have found that people will go slightly further with women who are provocatively dressed, but this result is not statistically significant. Basically you can’t say that’s an effect, it could easily be the play of chance. I told the journalist it isn’t one of our main findings, you can’t say that. It’s not significant, which is why we’re not reporting it in our main analysis.”

This would seem to go against some muslim claims that the hijab will reduce the incidences of rape. Or am I misreading it?

"he was being sued by a German vitamin pill magnate "

This seems to be an increasingly common response of...unconventional, shall we say?...pseudo-medical practitioners when they are criticised for not being able to do what they claim to do. The British Chiropractic Association is suing the science writer Simon Singh for describing their claims to be able to treat various childrens' illnesses as "bogus" and so implying- in the B.C.A.'s view- that chiroopractors are fraudulent rather than merely deluded in their claims.

As a result, every chiropractor in Britain who claimed to be able to treat these illnesses- quite a few, as it was standard self-description from the B.C.A. and its members- had to remove the claims from their advertising or risk being sued themselves for making untrue claims.
