If this is the Books etc in the Whitgift Centre, then it's a real shame. Although I couldn't afford the coffee there, it was a good place to kill time while waiting for someone. Probably couldn't compete since it was so close to Waterstones.

Some bookshops let you take books into the coffee shop; some don't. Waterstone's and Foyle's don't, while Borders do. I guess some bookshops don't want the books spoiled by coffee or greasy fingermarks, or people to just read the magazines over a coffee and never buy them; others allow them to be used for the purpose you mentioned.

I to enjoyed the homely feel of the old Books, etc in Croydon (which Waterstones lacked)
I've always been confused by the coffee shop etiquette in book shops and always avoided them; are you meant to purchase the book before heading to the coffee shop, or is it a place for you to browse through potential purchases?
