Assalamualaykum

Things like this happening on a US army base (Ft Hood is massive by the way)should be viewed at arms length. These things are never above board, especially considering that the biggest criminal of them all, Goldman Sachs is making a killing(pun intended). As the economy gets worse expect to see more of these domestic 'wag the dog' incidents to increase.

When i heard about this Hasan chap I knew immediately that his fondness for pole dancing whores would surface just like atta and co. No surprises there.

Abu Sinan, didn't the 9/11 hijackers also engage in such outwardly unIslamic behaviour though?

Never mind the fact that he seems to have been a regular at a local strip clubs. They interviewed some workers there who knew him well. He was there before the attack, drank part of a beer and had a lap dance. Not your typical Islamic extremist for sure.

I think a lot of people in the US (irrespective of religious belief) join the army to pay college tuition fees. Without the army's support, they would never afford access to such higher level education. I'm not saying it's right or wrong... but it's the reality.

As a majority of the population of Afghanistan, who are not enthusiastic supporters of the Taleban, are also muslims surely there is no contradiction between being a muslim and joining the armed forces- unless someone thinks that muslims must favour all other supposed muslims including the Taleban over others, which raises the question of why they live in a nonmuslim country anyway.

I heard this from people around me but never bothered to read the story. My only take is, we should, as responsible Muslims, refrain from judging others but make excuses until the truth of the matter is unveiled. Perhaps he joined the army on the principle 'war is deception', perhaps he just lost the plot (wouldn't be the first american to go on a killing spree), perhaps this or that. All this 'murtadh', 'kaffir' 'munafiqh'.. terms make me very uncomfortable as if it's the only way Muslims can analyse other Muslims. People did the same with Saddam, he was a baathist, corrupt, tyrant, dictator who than became a Hero. Well, whether he was a Hero or not, he was a stooge who turned against them and was punished. Perhaps Nidal Hassan is the same or maybe not. Too many questions and too many speculations, require many little grey cells, cells which i cannot afford to spare.

There's a big lure of money, especially in the contract jobs. AbuS had a heck of a time finding a job when he immigrated to the US, and kept getting job offers as a contract translator in Iraq for $200,000+. Very tempting.

It's been awhile since I've read it, but I believe James Yee's book "For God and Country" discusses a bit of the reconciliation of being a muslim in the american military. I think since he's written it though, he's gotten more anti military, and probably now wouldn't think any muslim should be in the military (haven't actually heard him say it, just my impression when I spoke with him about other things).
