Oh dear. I just watched the "discussion" (as you so appropriately placed in quotation marks) on iPlayer. It was so beyond cringe-worthy, that I had to refrain myself from disconnecting from the internet permanently, so as to save myself from any future cringe. What is it about us Muslims that consistently fails us in the debate department? Why do we insist on talking over one another! Bah!

Anywho, I've actually found myself warming to Maajid Nawaz of late. His performance against Khalid "how-on-earth-is-this-guy-an-MP" Mahmood on Newsnight a few weeks back, was nothing short of brilliant, and he seems to be promoting a sensible, albeit controversial (amongst Muslims) political opinion.

With regards to banning ALM, I'm very much of the opinion that a ban is probably not needed. All that is required, is for the media to stop giving undue coverage to a group that can barely muster 30 people to appear at their 'demonstrations'. The fact that Chaduhary and his band of merry men are given more publicity than the likes of Bungawala et al, clearly demonstrates a palpable, and dare I say it concerted, anti-Muslim sentiment running through the media. Bah, again.

Dont know much about the 2 characters on newsnight. Except for the fact that one represents a dangerous, intolerant and narrow-minded cult that attacks other muslims and the other is Anjum Chaudhry.

Timothy Garton Ash has written a typically mixed, anecdotal piece on this issue over on CiF, but he did make the valid point that governments "need to have compelling evidence that they will bring a real gain in security" by banning groups like this, adding "and I don't mean security for one political party against electoral attack from another."
