KlamAV v0.38 released

From KDE Apps:

Version 0.38 of KlamAV, the KDE front-end for the Linux anti-virus software ClamAV, has been released. Changes include a minimum requirement of KDE 3.5 and fixes to bugs affecting the initial extraction of the package (see changelog. Screenshots here, download (source, shell-script installer) here. Requires ClamAV, obviously.

More QScintilla v2 snapshots available

Riverbank Computing has announced that more snapshots of its QScintilla class, a Qt port of the Scintilla C++ editor class with syntax styling, error highlighting and other similar features, have been released. This version now works with both Qt3 and Qt4. Changelog here, downloads here.

Amarok v1.4.2 beta released

From KDE Apps:

A first beta of version 1.4.2 of Amarok, the KDE music player and cataloguer, has been released. This version adds DAAP support, allowing connections to iTunes and Firefly Media Server among other things, Advanced Tag Features (ATF), dynamic collections (allowing the use of removable media) and more, including bug fixes (changelog here). Screenshots here, source download here (stable version is 1.4.1; download that here; note that as with most KDE projects, they only supply sources; binaries are contribs).

QtiPlot v0.8.6 released

From KDE Apps:

Version 0.8.6 of QtiPlot, an open-source clone of the data analysis app Origin, has been released. This version adds a scripting interface, changes the build procedure so that liborigin is no longer shipped with it, SVG export of 2D plots, and numerous other new features (changelog on the KDE Apps page). QtCurve v0.40 released

Version 0.40 of the Qt/KDE theme QtCurve has been released. This version adds a configurable highlight factor (0-50%) and various other bug fixes and improvements (see changelog at KDE Look). Download at KDE Look; Kubuntu i386 package here.

BasKet v0.6.0 beta released

From KDE Apps:

A second beta of version 0.6.0 of BasKet, an application for KDE to keep reminders etc in "baskets", has been released. This version adds Kontact integration, improved tags support and translations, and a vast number of other features and improvements (see KDE Apps page). Download of beta version here along with screenshot. Stable version is 0.5.0; download that here. Requires KDE 3.

Trolltech releases preview of Java binding

Trolltech today announced that it has released a technology preview of "Qt Jambi", its bindings for Java which enable Qt programs to be written in Java and deployed on Windows, X11 and the Mac. The preview is not intended for developing production applications but for testing and feedback. A FAQ is here and full API docs are here. The preview can be downloaded here.

Beesoft Commander v2.25 released

Version 2.25 of Beesoft Commander, a twin-panel Qt-based file manager and FTP client, has been released. This version adds two new features to the viewer module, namely viewing Qt-supported images and displaying HTML as on a web browser, not as code. digiKam v0.9.0 beta released

Qt 4.2 snapshot binary released

From QDevBlog:

A development snapshot of Qt 4.2 has been released in binary form; the main changes being the merging of QMessageBox and QMessageBoxEx and updates to the D-Bus support. It can be downloaded from here. (The binaries are listed among the sources; there is a Mac disk image and a Windows/MinGW installer.) Stable version remains 4.1.4.

Gambas: new development version

A new development version of Gambas, the Visual Basic-like development environment for Unix with a KDE front-end, has been released. This version includes a re-designed "find" dialog in the IDE and numerous other fixes and improvements to the IDE, the interpreter, and the Qt, form, MDI, settings and GTK components. QScintilla v2 snapshots available

Riverbank Computing have started releasing snapshots of its C++ editor class QScintilla, based on Neil Hodgson's Scintilla class. This version will support Qt 4 (without the Qt 3 compatibility classes); support for Qt 3 is planned also. Changelog here, downloads here. The stable version is v1.6 and requires Qt 3.

Dolphin File Manager v0.6.0 released

From KDE Apps:

Version 0.6.0 of Dolphin File Manager, a file manager for KDE with a navigation bar, has been released. This version fixes various bugs and adds different sort orders for all views, zooming of the current view and a Tools menu, including console launching and file searching and comparing. kdesvn v0.9.1 released

Version 0.9.1 of kdesvn, the KDE client for the Subversion source-control system, has been released. This version fixes bugs the author says should have been fixed before 0.9 was released, including adding some libraries to the build path; there are some speed improvements also. Gambas: new stable version

Version 1.0.17 of Gambas, a Visual Basic-like development environment for Unix (with a Qt/KDE GUI), has been released. Changes include bug-fixes back-ported from the development version, affecting the IDE, the interpreter, and the evaluation, Qt and database components. Trolltech announces new official Qt book

Trolltech has announced the latest version of the official Qt book, C++ GUI Programming with Qt 4 by Jasmin Blanchette and Mark Summerfield, published by Prentice Hall. This version adds three new chapters, on item view classes, plugins and embedded programming, and an appendix introducing C++ and Qt to Java and C# programmers. The style is very similar to the existing Qt 3 book. It is also available through Amazon, probably cheaper than in your local chain bookstore (if you're in the UK, buy it from the link on the right and help fund A Qt Blog).

KBarcode v2.0.4 released

Version 2.0.4 of KBarcode, a KDE barcode and label printing app for KDE, has been released. This version features an updated French translation and fixes for alignment bugs in the label editor and for database access problems. Screenshots here, downloads (source, FC5 and SUSE 10 RPM) here. KPoGre v1.3.9 released

Version 1.3.9 of KPoGre, a KDE admin tool for PostgreSQL which uses the libpgxx, has been released. This version adds wizards for setting database object description and for enabling and disabling triggers and reworked the GUI to KMDI IDEAl mode (see KDE Apps page for full list). Kate v2.5.3 & KWrite v4.5.3 released

Beesoft Commander v2.24 released

This version adds the ability to concatenate two files, "slightly changes" file deletion on remote servers, and makes "a few changes" in FTP connections. kdesvn v0.9.0 released

Version 0.9.0 of kdesvn, a KDE client for the version control system Subversion, has been released. This version adds a French translation, "more differenced context menus", support for encodings other than UTF-8, the ability to dump local repositories and "create a new subversion repository and creates base layout (as standalone app only)" (both in response to feature requests). Kslackcheck v3.4 released

Version 3.4 of KSlackcheck, a KDE utility for checking changelogs in Slackware, has been released. This version is described as "mainly a bugfix release with some improvements in the package check engine , especially for /patches packages". New Blanchette-Summerfield book in shops

Jasmin Blanchette and Mark Summerfield's book C++ GUI Programming with Qt4 is starting to appear in the UK's bookshops - I saw it myself in the Waterstone's branch in Picadilly, London (the former Simpson's) yesterday. It cost £42.99; it is basically an update for Qt 4 with a new section on introducing the C++/Qt way of programming to Java and C# programmers. Alternatively, buy it from Amazon (if you are in the UK, buy it from the right-hand column and help keep this blog going).

PyQt v4.0.1 released

Riverbank Computing have released version 4.0.1 of its Python-Qt bindings PyQt, which they describe as "primarily a bug fix release for pyuic4 and pylupdate4" (changelog here). Downloads of PyQt 3 and 4 here.

CrossVC XXL v1.8.3 released; German book out

From KDE Apps:

Version 1.8.3 of CrossVC XXL, the commercial version of the Qt version-control application formerly known as LinCVS, has been released. This version contains bug fixes and minor improvements. The software is free for non-commercial use, and costs EUR78.50 for the professional version with updates for a year. Screenshots here, downloads (Windows, Mac OS X.4 universal, Linux, Solaris and FreeBSD binaries) here. The open-source version is 1.5.0 and downloads are on the same page. Requires Qt 3 (static versions of the commercial version are available).

A German book about CrossVC has also been released by Open Source Press; see here. Price is EUR 34.90.

Gwenview: new stable and development versions

Stable version 1.3.1 and development version 1.3.92 of Gwenview, an image browser for KDE, have been released. 1.3.1 fixes compilation with GCC 4.1 and a bug which truncated images when saving to non-local URLs (and more; see link above) and 1.3.92 contains a number of bug fixes and minor improvements. Screenshots at KDE Apps; downloads here. The stable version requires KDE 3.2, the development version 3.4.

KOffice v1.5.2 released

The KOffice project has released another bug-fix version of its software (press release here, announcement here, changelog here). Major changes include Krita working on PowerPC, fixes for a number of crash bugs, "Karbon [vector drawing] improved interaction with shapes a lot", and numerous other bug fixes. The project only releases sources (mirrors here, instructions here, but binaries are available from SUSE and Ubuntu).

WebKit ported to Qt 4

A group of core KDE developers has begun work on porting WebKit, Apple's derivative of KHTML (the HTML rendering engine used in Konqueror), to Qt 4. The initial work for "Unity" was done at the KDE Four Core meeting in Trysil, Norway, by Dirk Mueller, Zack Rusin, Simon Hausmann and George Staikos. The plan is not, at the moment, to replace KHTML with Unity, but to merge recent work done on KHTML into WebKit and synchronise the two engines. Kopete text-to-speech plugin v1.3.0 released

Version 1.3.0 of the Kopete KTTS plugin, the Kopete text-to-speech plugin, has been released. This version can now read outgoing as well as incoming messages and can read out only messages which start a chat session. Twinkle v0.8.1 released

Version 0.8.1 of Twinkle, a Qt-based SIP telephony (i.e. VoIP) app, has been released. This version removes the iLBC source code (though one can still link against the iLBC library), fixes a crash bug involving KAddressBook lookups on incoming calls, and makes improvements to the build process. Piklab v0.10 released

Version 0.10 of Piklab, an IDE for developing embedded applications on the PIC and dsPIC microcontrollers, has been released. This version adds support for the JAL compiler and editor syntax highlighting, drag-and-drop re-ordering of source files in the project manager, support for the C18 compiler and for C30 with Wine and with coff format, and several other improvements and bug fixes. Treeline v1.0 released

Version 1.0.0 of TreeLine, a Python application to store any kind of information in a tree structure, has been released. This version fixes a problem which caused duplicate nodes to appear when pasting multiple nodes, fixes the saving of encrypted files by the German version, and removes the (broken) function of deriving types from other derived types. Screenshots here, downloads (source only) here. Requires Qt 2.3 or 3, Python 2.3+, PyQt 2.4+ and an XML parser such as that of PyXML; spell checker recommended.

KFlickr v0.6 released

From KDE Apps:

Version 0.6 of KFlickr, a KDE app allowing uploading of photos to a Flickr account, has been released. This version adds online help, a Konqueror service menu, DCOP support allowing photos to be added by other applications, and various bug fixes and other improvements. Trolltech completes IPO

Trolltech today announced that it had completed its IPO (initial public offering), with 7.5 million shares (at 16 NOK per share) being subscribed after the company listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange, with 94% of the shares allocated to the institutional offering and 6% to the retail offering; of the former, 65% of the demand came from within Norway. The company now has more than 300 shareholders.

KPowersave v0.6.2-stable released

Version 0.6.2-stable of KPowersave, the KDE front-end for the Powersave daemon which provides battery monitoring, suspend/standby triggers and related features for KDE (and GNOME), has been released. This version updates to powersave 0.12.18 or later, fixes several bugs and updates several of the translations and the code documentation. PC-BSD v1.2 beta released

From the PC-BSD forums (via OSNews):

A beta of version 1.2 of PC-BSD, a desktop FreeBSD distribution, has been released. This version contains updated ports, PyQt and PyKDE as standard (allowing SuperKaramba plugins to work), Bash shell in the default install, DBSD Network / User Toolset in the Control Panel, and a number of other new features and improvements. Can be downloaded as an ISO or as a patch. The final is expected to be released this month.

Bibble v4.8 released

Version 4.8 of Bibble, a commercial image manipulation package for Linux, Windows and Mac OS X which supports RAW conversion, has been released. This version adds support for the Fuji S3 Pro and Panasonic LX1, Tethered Shooting support on the Fuji S2 Pro and S3 Pro (Windows only), a black & white conversion plugin and enhanced lens correction, and various bug fixes. It can be downloaded as shareware; prices are $69.95 for Bibble Lite and $129.95 for Bibble Pro. Requires 512Mb on all platforms (more recommended). Uses Qt 3.

Catkin QTM v0.3.7 released (update)

Version 0.3.7 of Catkin QTM, a blogging client for Wordpress, Movable Type et al written by the maintainer of this blog using Qt 4.1, has been released. This version fixes a bug by which categories were not being set properly when loading entries from disk, and also prompts for a password if an entry was saved without one. It also adds the ability to insert common filenames for XML-RPC receivers into the preferences dialog via a context menu, and to browse for a directory in which to place drafts. Screenshots here, download (source and RPM for SUSE 10.1) here. Requires Qt 4.1 (4.1.1 or later strongly recommended).

Amarok v1.4.1 released

Version 1.4.1 of Amarok, the KDE multi-featured audio player, has been released. This version adds support for Last.FM streams, Creative Nomad Jukebox and custom scoring algorithms, requires LibVisual 0.4, and adds a new icon theme; there are "many usability improvements" arising from collaboration with OpenUsability, the classic layout restored, and the capital K at the end dropped. Twinkle v0.8 released

Version 0.8 of Twinkle, a soft phone which uses the SIP protocol, has been released. This version supports RFC 3951 (Internet Low Bit-rate Codec or ILBC) and 3952 (Real-Time Transport Protocol Payload format for ILBC speech). There are many other new features and bug fixes; see the Twinkle news page for details. Gambas: new development version

From KDE Apps:

A new development version of Gambas ("Gambas almost means Basic, a Visual Basic-like programming environment for Unix) has been released. Version 1.9.33 contains bug fixes by which "memory management does not leak stack anymore", and equality/inequality operators work properly when comparing text with NULL. There are also a number of bug-fixes to the IDE. Full changelog here, screenshots here, downloads (source only) here. Stable version is 1.0.16, this version being recommended for any serious work.

Konsole tops terminal group test

Konsole has come top in a group test of terminal emulators in Linux Format with 9 marks out of 10 (version 3.5.2 tested). Features noted included its versatility, its filesystem bookmarks, and its integration with the rest of KDE. The review noted that it was not one of the fastest, something which could be remedied by turning off anti-aliasing. GNOME Terminal got 8 out of 10, and xterm only three, it being noted that it was the slowest at scrolling text "by quite a margin". Others tested were Rxvt, Wterm, Eterm, Aterm and Mlterm.
