Traverso DAW v0.42.0 released

From KDE Apps:

Version 0.42.0 of Traverso DAW, an audio recording and editing tool, has been released. Changes:

  • Read and write support for Ogg Vorbis, WavPack, FLAC and MP3
  • On the fly sample rate conversion
  • A simple yet effective Project backup and restore system
  • Better use of available hard disk bandwidth
  • Encoding formats for recording added: W64 and WavPack
  • 3 new themes added, notably the medium-contrast and ubuntu theme
  • Fixed a number of bugs, added new ones and various improvements all over the place
  • User Manual translated into German and Portuguese

digiKam v0.9.3 released

Version 0.9.3 of digiKam, the KDE digital photo downloader and organiser, has been released. Changes since v0.9.2:

  • Ability to drag and drop from anywhere into the album tree
  • A GOTO function that allows the user "to GOTO any other view with pertinent context, e.g. from date view right-click on an image and GOTO the Album or Tag view that this image is associated with"
  • A new filter bar allowing filtering based on strings
  • New rating and MIME-type filter widgets on the status bar
  • New B&W green colour tone filter
  • Several usability improvements in LightTable
  • Ability to download and delete from camera in one operation
  • Drag-drop from camera window to the album table
  • New bar graph showing free space
  • CImg library updated to v1.2.4
  • XML-based colour schemes (previously, X11 format)
  • Camera interface used to import new images into collections
  • Dozens of bug fixes

KAlarm v1.4.21 released

Version 1.4.21 of KAlarm, the KDE alarm and event scheduler, has been released. Changelog reads:

Version 1.4.21: The last used main window show/hide options are now remembered when KAlarm restarts. Multiple identical error messages are now suppressed. A crash when saving preferences has been fixed.

Ars Technica does Qt 4.4 preview

Ryan Paul at Ars Technica has done a test of the Qt 4.4 technology preview, which includes the WebKit web rendering module and the KDE-derived Phonon multimedia library. The article contains screenshots, including one of the "bling" effects of the new widget feature in QGraphicsView, and his conclusion, as a GTK user, is that he is "very impressed with the new functionality in Qt 4.4, and ... looking forward to seeing how the KDE community and other Qt users leverage the features".

Kim (KDE Image Menu) v0.9.5 released

Version 0.9.5 of Kim (KDE Image Menu), a KDE service menu allowing common manipulations of images, has been released. The only change since v0.9.4 is the ability to auto-rotate images from EXIF information. A demo is available here; downloads are at KDE Apps. Requires KDE 3.3.

FOSDEM 2008: Devroom Talks Wanted

Talks are being sought for a joint session with GNOME developers at FOSDEM 2008 (ULB Campus Solbosh, Avenue Franklin D. Roosevelt, no. 50, 1050 Bruxelles, Belgium). Talks should be about issues which transcend free desktops rather than KDE-specific ones; see last year's KDE and Cross-desktop talks for a guide. See the KDE Wiki page for accommodation details, and add yourself to the page or contact Bart Coppens if you want to give a talk.

Trolltech releases Qt 4.4 technology preview

Trolltech has released a technology preview of Qt v4.4, which is expected to be released in March 2008. Major new features include:

  • Integration with WebKit, the Apple open-source XHTML rendering engine based on KDE's KHTML
  • Multimedia framework, based on KDE's Phonon
  • Enhanced XML support, including support for XQuery v1.0 (which includes XPath 2.0)
  • Concurrency framework, which means safer and simpler multi-threading
  • An IPC framework, focussed on shared memory and system locks
  • A new help system, including an Assistant-type framework which can be embedded in any application

Gambas 2: second release candidate

A second release candidate of version 2 of Gambas, the Visual Basic-like IDE for Unix which uses KDE, has been released. Changes include:

  • The development environment toolbar icon size now follows the font size.
  • You can send key events to other applications.
  • The Observer class can catch events after they have been processed.
  • GridView cells can display rich text.

LyX v1.5.3 released

Version 1.5.3 of LyX, a WYSIWYG editor which produces LaTeX output, has been released. Changelog:

This is a maintenance release that further improves the stability and the performance. Besides numerous crashes, the display problems that slipped into 1.5.2 with the performance fixes (on the Mac and on Windows) as well as problems entailed to the reworked document classes were fixed. Furthermore, LyX 1.5.3 comes with speed improvements that should pay off especially on the Mac and other UNIXes. Finally, this version also provides some new features (detailed list here).

Eric4 v4.0.4 released

Version 4.0.4 of Eric4, the IDE for Python written using PyQt, has been released. This is a bug fix release; ongoing changelog here. Screenshots here, downloads (source only; it's Python) here. Requires Qt v4.2 and Python v2.4 (full list here).

Smb4K v0.9.0 released

Version 0.9.0 of Smb4K, a SMB (Windows) share browser for KDE, has been released. Changes include:

  • Cleaned up the code and updated the copyright statements.
  • Smb4K now uses KConfig XT throughout the whole application. This breaks compatibility with older versions of Smb4K.
  • Replaced the old configuration dialog with a new one based on KConfigDialog.
  • Added some more configuration options for smbclient and mount.cifs.
  • Changed some (default) configuration options.
  • Removed obsolete Smb4KUser class.
  • Implemented validity checks into the core container classes, so that only IPv4 and IPv6 IP addresses are used.
  • Modified Smb4KGlobal namespace.
  • Removed Smb4KHomesShareHandler::convert() function.
  • Revised Smb4KCore class.

KDE 4: second release candidate

The KDE project have issued a second release candidate of KDE 4.0, codenamed Coenig; there has also been a sixth alpha of the new KOffice (source download). The codebase is "now feature-complete", but work is ongoing in "fixing bugs, finishing off artwork and smoothing out the user experience". Official announcement is here; info page with downloads and instructions here. Packages are available for Kubuntu (Gutsy), Mandriva 2008, OpenSUSE, Debian experimental and Red Hat/Fedora Rawhide.

Qt Jambi v4.3.3_01 released

Trolltech has released the Java bindings for version 4.3.3 of Qt. The biggest change is a new QProperty class, replacing QPropertyManager which is deprecated and will be removed in v4.4. digiKam v0.9.3: first RC

A first release candidate of version 0.9.3 of digiKamSc, the digital photo download, management and (basic) manipulation software for KDE, has been released. Changes:

  • New "live filter" tool allowing searching in albums, tags etc., similar to Amarok
  • Support for *.3gp and *.mp4 video files in digiKam (already supported by KDE video players)
  • Viewing pictures recursively in albums and sub-albums
  • Incremental search for tags in all tag fields.
  • Various bug fixes

cb2Bib v0.9.2 released

Version 0.9.2 of cb2Bib, an application for rapidly extracting bibliographic references from emails, PDFs and journal web pages, has been released. Changes:

  • A potential crash when deleting the last item in a list view has been fixed.
  • Overextended merging of contiguous excepts has been corrected. BibTeX parser, searches, and composite searches have been optimized.
  • Some fixes/workarounds for Qt older than 4.3.3 file dialogs and exec icon for the X11 version have been introduced.

KSquirrel v0.8.0 released

Version 0.8.0 of KSquirrel, an image viewer for KDE which uses OpenGL, has been released. Changes:

  • new runtime options: --nodirectorybasket, --noimagebasket, --nocategories and --nomountview
  • added Konqueror intergation module
  • added printing feature in image window
  • added codec manager, which will allow to enable/disable image codecs (requires root password)
  • fixed licensing issues in source code
  • fixed MIME types in .desktop files
  • time counting in image window is more fair

Changes in the libraries (ksquirrel-libs):

  • added EPS, PSP
  • bugfix in PNM decoder on P3 PNMs
  • bugfix in CAMERA codec, when KSquirrel couldn't open raw photos

KBib v0.6.3 released

Version 0.6.3 of KBib, a bibliography manager for KDE which stores its files in BibTex format, has been released. Changes:

  • Fix crashing when performing searching with white space (thanks Michael Martins for the fix)
  • Fix lost of comment field beginning with white space after saving file
  • Fix new reference from DOI. Crossref.org user name and password can be entered to allow crossref.org access
  • Fix missing publisher field for book in default reference type definition table
  • Add German translation (by Benjamin von Engelhardt)
  • Make poppler optional. Without popper and poppler-qt, new reference from PDF files will be disable.

Qt and Qtopia v4.3.3 released

Qt and Qtopia Core 4.3.3 Released — Trolltech

Trolltech has released version 4.3.3 of Qt, its cross-platform application toolkit, and its embedded cousin Qtopia. Changes:

  • Common Development and Distribution License (CDDL) added to list of licences permitted for open source Qt development, and new commercial and academic Qt licences
  • Fixed multiple issues preventing binaries built on Leopard from being deployed on Tiger and Panther systems.
  • Various bug-fixes and optimisations in a variety of classes on all platforms
  • Fixed crash bug in Qtopia compiled without FreeType support

KDE 4 release postponed to 11th Jan

The KDE Release Team have decided to postpone the release of KDE 4 to 11th January next year, as they want to solve "a couple of essential issues", affecting the visual appearance and Konqueror, and upstream library problems. An overview of the issues can be found here at KDE TechBase. However, substantial parts of the system are release-ready, including the KDE Development Platform.
