If any proof were needed that some Jews will cry “anti-semitism” at the slightest nuance of hostility to their organisations or to Israel, however well-grounded, it comes in Melanie Phillips’ latest “diary” (posh word for blog) post, A modern racial libel<\/a>. The post, basically reproducing most of an article by the infamous Nidra Poller, is about how the case of Muhammad al-Dura was (allegedly) distorted for pro-Palestinian ends.<\/p>\n


\nNow, I’m not going to go into the specifics of the case here as I’m not well-placed to say whether the story was distorted or not. Nidra Poller is not exactly an unbiased source; in the past, she was cited by Robert Spencer<\/a> regarding how Paris was becoming a bad place to be a Jew<\/a> because of Muslim violence and public sympathy for Muslims (not for Muslim schoolgirls, though!). She also referred to cases of so-called ritual murder by Muslims of Jews in Paris, “ritual” because they said Allahu akbar (Allah is great). As I pointed out before, that doesn’t make it ritual; it’s still just plain hate crime.<\/p>\n

Just as Jews don’t, and Muslims historically didn’t say they did, slaughter Christian children to make passover matzos, Muslims do not have any such thing as a ritual in which people, of whatever religion, are killed. The only ritual killing is of farm animals. But in Phillips’ recent whinge, she compares the Dura story to the “Protocols of the Elders of Zion”, a well-known Russian forgery of an open Jewish conspiracy. Given that the Protocols concerned the whole Jewish nation and was used as an excuse for physical attacks on Jews, while this incident concerns one Israeli soldier and, possibly, wider Israeli attitudes towards such incidents, the comparison is fatuous and fraudulent. Regardless of whether this incident was as reported or not, there have been many accusations of Israeli soldiers deliberately shooting at innocent people, including children.<\/p>\n

I don’t doubt that the use of “libel” in the title is intended to raise the connotations of the “blood libel” in the mind of the reader. By all means, if this case is not as reported, expose it – that’s why we have a free press. But comparing it to the Protocols is not only ridiculous, but devious as well.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
