The problem has got worse with Facebook in the last couple of weeks in particular, since their last redesign (which, as ever, actually causes a decline in the quality of the service, not an improvement). The pages are all dynamic, meaning that when you click something, it usually shows up straight away rather than loading another page. However, all too often, they just do nothing, because there’s a loss of connectivity or the entire page/program hasn’t loaded.

Thus, when you click the little X to get rid of a friend or fan suggestion, nothing happens. When you click the “Chat” box, nothing happens. The notifications show up, but don’t disappear when you actually read what they notify you about. Worse, the other day Facebook appeared to have lost the entire thread of a long conversation I’d had with someone, which caused a mixture of panic and anger to rise in me, before checking again a few minutes later to find it was all there after all.

Facebook won many converts from MySpace for many good reasons, among them the fact that the appearance is consistent and always readable and customisation very limited – you don’t ever have to see past someone’s graphical “skin”. Why has it all gone downhill now? Perhaps because too many people are using it? Or just because the latest redesign has not been done right?

YouTube has also had quite a few problems lately, mainly related to the “channels” the user has. Nothing works on the channel pages until all the video thumbnails have loaded. You can’t choose between the uploads and favourites, or watch a video, or do anything until it’s all loaded, and mostly these days it seems to take ages, making the channel pages next to useless. It’s often easier just to Google the channel owner’s nickname and then click through to the video you want. Your YouTube homepage also has similar problems to Facebook, such as the “X” buttons (to make video recommendations go away) which simply do nothing. It all makes using the services extremely frustrating, but I guess they don’t have much competition at the moment, so there’s no great rush to fix the problem.

Has anyone else noticed that web services like YouTube and Facebook have become more and more flaky and unreliable the last few weeks?
