Borat's Kazakh is actually Hebrew
Guardian Film: Secret of Borat's fluent Kazakh - it's Hebrew
From the Guardian website: not only is the "Kazakh" spoken by Sacha Baron Cohen in Borat actually Hebrew, but the film is full of Israeli cultural references:
The film is peppered with Hebrew expressions and Israeli slang, inside jokes only Israelis could truly appreciate. In one scene, Borat sings the lyrics of a Hebrew folk song, Koom Bachur Atzel, which means "get up lazy boy". Later, he refers to a Kazakh government scientist, "Dr Yarmulke," who proved that a woman's brain is the size of a squirrel's. Even Borat's signature catchphrase - "Wa wa wee wa," an expression for wow - derives from a skit on a popular comedy show and is often heard in Israel.
Also Abu Sinan noticed that the name of Borat's home town "Kusik" is an Arabic anatomical reference.
Comments
Borat is a very funny film. Many Americans took it too seriously, but Americans can't laugh at themselves like the English can.
I always liked Baron Cohen when he was Ali G, but that character ran its course as everyone knows who he is. This is now true of Borat, so he'll have to invent a new character.

Try reading Borat's name backwards : Borat Sagdiyev = Vey, I'd Gas T Arob

Yea I went to go see the film the second time I saw it with an Israeli guy and he told me it was Hebrew and that Cohen speaks the language almost perfectly.

I'm suprised you think that. Mark Steyn's American friends made a big fuss about it for portraying Americans as anti-semitic. They asked why he didn't make the film in Britain where apparently most people are anti-semitic according to Steyn and Co.

Shamil - as I said, some Americans thought it was anti-semitic, but it wasn't - it was ironic. Most Americans don't get irony.
I think Steyn is Canadian.

Nobody complained because they thought the film was anti-semitic. They complained because they saw it as trying to portray Americans as anti-semitic.Cohen himself basically admitted that his intention was to expose indifference to anti-semitism.

He felt he had to say that, because people - mainly Americans - are earnest and don't see the film for what it is, namely just a laugh. So he had to claim it was about exposing anti-semitism, when really it was just a lot of clowing around.
Now here's a thought. Why don't Muslims make funny films? Perhaps they do - if so, let me know, because it is something I would like to see, and something that would help ease tensions.
Open to suggestions.

Why should Muslims(who you hate so much) make "entertainment" for the likes of you, pRickler? Stick to Borat's toilet humor.

I don't hate Muslims - I have problems with Islam. There is no reason why Muslims should make funny films just for me, but they may want to make them for each other, for non-Muslims or - best of all - for a laugh.
This is a genuine question - comedies made by Muslims, please.
And what is wrong with toilet humour. It's very very funny.

Right, you don't hate Muslims, you just hate Islam. Talk about disingenuous pathetic cop outs. Yeah, Muslims should make comedy because you think that they don't have fun in their lives. What hubris. You like toilet humor? Why am I not surprised? Home is where the heart is, eh? That stuff stops being "funny" after you reach adulthood. You are an adult aren't you? How much more predictably dull can you get...

They're not that difficult to find. There's plenty on the arab and asian TV channels.
I don't hate Muslims - I have problems with Islam
That's what BNP leader Nick Griffins says as well.

Maybe, but in English? I'm not saying they aren't any, or Muslims don't ever like a laugh, just asking if there are some comedies made by Muslims, as Goodness Gracious Me is by Hindus and loads of things are by Jews.
That's what BNP leader Nick Griffins says as well.
That's silly. Nick Griffin probably says "it's cold today" too. It doesn't mean that if you say it you share his views.
Griffin's issues are with the skin colour of Muslims. Mine is with aspects of the religion. Anyway, Merry Christmas, even if you don't celebrate it.

Old Pickler, here's some Muslim comedy in English. I've never heard them myself, so I can't tell you any more about them.

Little Mosque on the Prairie, a Canadian sitcom created by Zarqa Nawaz
I'm sure there's more, but these are two that I remember hearing about.

"Certain aspects" meaning any and all aspects of Islam in pRickler's warped world, as her history of frothy mouthed carping proves. Griffin's "problem" with Islam is just as much based on religion as race, both of which many an islamophobe mix but claim it has nothing to do with race. Right.
Now thats almost funny. You really ought that rabies shot before the rot reaches whats left of your brain, pRickler.

DrM - why don't you try argument instead of abuse?
Ummabdulla - thanks, will have a look.

Cmon pRickler, you really shouldn't complain about "abuse." Atleast not with your history of hateful invective....
Respect is a two way street.

Mark Steyn is a Canadian who lives in New Hampshire.
Old Pickler is quite correct about Americans lacking a sense of irony. Perhaps that's why they're so wonderfully naieve and have such boundless optimism.
Americans rarely see problemes, just solutions and opportunities.
