MPAC on backbiting …

I’m not sure if the people at MPAC UK read the letter I sent them last night, but today an article has appeared on their site about the subject of backbiting. It seems that even if they read my email, even if they wrote this article in response to it, they have not taken any notice of it.

There is many a good reason why the Prophet (pbuh) ordered Muslims to refrain from the sins of backbiting and slander. In what is probably the most quoted hadith of our time the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said: ?Do you know what backbiting is?? They (the companions) said, ?God and His Messenger know best.? He then said, ?It is to say something about your brother that he would dislike.? someone asked him, ?But what if what I say is true?? The Messenger of God said, ?If what you say about him is true, you are backbiting him, but if it is not true then you have slandered him.? (Muslim)

Far be it for me to analyse the merits of this hadith, I?ll just leave that to our 1000 or so Imams who are far too busy with their books to do anything else. However let there be no doubt, in it lies a profound lesson on the merits of brotherhood.

First things first: the use of “pbuh” is inadequate as is the Arabic equivalent “sal’am” - we say sall’ Allahu ‘alaihi wa sallam, as no abbreviation contains the baraka of this sentence as it does not carry the meaning. Then, they embark on a mass slander of “the Imams” who they accuse of being “far too busy with their books to do anything else” other than analyse this hadeeth. Do these people even realise what they are saying? How on earth can they presume to be “defending Islam” or “defending Muslims” when they attack those who transmit it?
