Ginny appeal info

Note: all future info on Ginny will appear at Ginny’s Appeal.

Background: On Sunday 6th March 2005, our friend Ginny Quick, along with her brother and sister-in-law, lost nearly all her possessions in a house fire. She is left with the clothes she was wearing when she fled: a pair of pyjamas, a jacket, a hijab and a pair of shoes. (She has also lost her mobile phone, although it was insured.)

Ginny is blind, and is the only Muslim in her family. She lives in Erin, Tennessee, the nearest big town being Clarksville. She has recently escaped from a violent and possibly exploitative marriage, as she has documented in her weblog. She has a guide dog, which helped her escape from the fire and is safe. However, the family lost two other pets.

I have sent out various appeals to various groups of Muslims; I have, for example, left her address and phone number with Dr Awadh Binhazim of the Islamic Center of Nashville. However, I have not had a reply from him. I have also raised the issue on the New Muslims’ Project forum, but have had no reply from anyone on that forum except Ginny herself.

Obviously, Ginny and her family will need money, and in the immediate future, clothes. She has sent me an email with details of her size and those of her brother and sister-in-law. (Measurements are all American of course.)

Ginny: 6 or 6 1/2 in shoes; 3 or 5 in jeans and small or possibly medium in shirts. Brother: 32 x 32 pants, medium or large shirts, 10-11 shoes Sister-in-law: 5-7 jeans; 6 1/2 to 7 shoes

Her brother has a PayPal account. PayPal uses email addresses for identification; his is que666999@yahoo.com. Ginny would like aid sent to her family as well as to her; we should try, insha Allah, to establish a channel for aid to Ginny herself, particularly for religious goods.

Ginny Update - What You Can Do (from Umm Zaid) What Are We Going To Do … (from Scorpion)

From now on, insha Allah, updates to the situation of Ginny Quick and her recent house fire will appear here. All times are GMT.

8th March

  • Ginny reported that the family cannot accept credit card payments though PayPal. They would have to use the money with a “PayPal-accepting merchant”. (Nothing I’ve seen on PayPal’s website gives that impression, and I’ve got an account. But that’s what Ginny’s brother says.)
  • Levantine Historian reports that people cannot buy Ginny Wal-Mart vouchers from the UK. It is possible, however, to buy Target vouchers.
  • Umm Zaid is asking people to buy Braille paper. It costs $29 plus shipping and handling for a case with 1,000 sheets in it.
  • Umm Zaid reports that Bint eh Adam, from Tranquilart in the UK, is to auction off six prints of photographs she took in Grenada and donate the proceeds to Ginny.
